Jacqui Chatwood and Weaver Vale Housing Trust

Weaver Vale Housing Trust provides homes for general needs and sheltered housing in West Cheshire. The trust’s board has a vital role to play, ensuring the organisation continues to provide an excellent service to its customers and delivers its 20:20 Vision. Having the right people on the board is essential, which is why the trust chose Resonate Search and Selection Ltd to find the best candidate.

The Project

Weaver Vale Housing Trust owns and operates 6,316 properties, delivering homes and services for people who are disabled, over 55 or on benefits. The trust also aims to support and provide education, training and work experience for those tenants who are unemployed; to date, 50 people have been placed in work. Investment in its properties and the neighbourhoods in which they reside is a priority for the trust, with 100% of its properties meeting the Decent Home Standards. There is also continued investment to ensure all homes are affordable to heat.

To make sure the trust continues to improve the quality of life for its customers it needs a diverse and dedicated board, which comprises of tenants, council nominees and independent people, with each individual bringing a different range of skills and strengths to the board. Each member can serve a maximum of nine years on the board before they have to step down, which means that one person has to be replaced every year. Finding the best replacement is crucial.

The Solution

Jacqui Chatwood was approached by Alison Cannon of Resonate Search and Selection Ltd for the part-time role of non-executive director (NED) on the trust’s board. As the Managing Director of Advance Performance, a personal and corporate development training consultancy, Jacqui is people-focused. She understands change management and as a chartered accountant has a strong background in finance. She is also a governor and audit committee member of Runshaw College.

The recruitment process for the trust’s board was extensive with the short-listed candidates invited to an evening event to meet the executive team and board followed by a second structured interview for those selected to go forward. Jacqui was successful and appointed as a non-executive board member in September 2014.

The Results

Since her appointment Jacqui has spent up to a day with each directorate to gain a better understanding of how the organisation works, from visiting new build projects to meeting those who run the trust’s women’s refuge. Jacqui is confident that by understanding the trust, as well as the social, financial and political arenas within which it operates and getting to know the people on a more personal level she will be in the best position to help steer the trust as it fulfils its vision and to challenge the executive board if necessary.

This she can do because she is the right person for the job. She felt confident in putting herself forward for the role even though she had not been to a formal job interview for many years.

“Alison at Resonate was brilliant. I didn’t feel as though I was one of many, instead I felt confident that Alison believed in me,” explained Jacqui. “The job market has changed since I had my last interview but Alison guided me through the process. She was with me every step of the way.

“Weaver Vale Housing Trust is a brilliant organisation with a great team of people. There are many different types of people on the board, who all bring different skills and qualities. It’s been a big learning curve for me but I’m thoroughly enjoying the challenge.”

By understanding the requirements of the client and the strengths of the candidate, Resonate Search and Selection Ltd has been able to find the best person for this challenging but rewarding role.
